Understanding the Bible

Course Description:  This online course focuses on the historical timeline of biblical events, the development of the canon, and the challenges of interpretation.   The use of commentaries and study Bibles is discussed as well as responsible use of the scripture in preaching and teaching.     The class is prerequisite for those entering the Certificate of Pastoral Ministry program, but other laity are welcome and encouraged to attend.  

Instructor:  Rev. John Bracke,  is the recently retired Martha McCall Egan Professor of Biblical Studies at Eden Theological Seminar, St. Louis, MO.  Having served as the pastor of two congregations, Professor Bracke is aware of the ways that pastors must use scripture in preaching and worship, teaching and pastoral care.

 

Dates:  February 4 thru March 4 or October 1-29, 2013 (each a separate course)
